There
are about 30 marinas on the Andalucían coast, which means
that Andalucía has an enviable berthing capacity that places
it at the head of Europe in this type of installation.
There are now marinas all the way along the coast offering water
sports enthusiasts every conceivable activity on the water, from
catching a humble sardine to sailing aboard magnificent yacht.
In the last thirty years Puerto Banus has developed from a small
fishing village into the jet-set marina home to some of the world's
most luxurious boats.
The last few years have seen a boom
in leisure sailing and water sports facilities.
In particular several excellent marinas have been developed along the coast, many in conjunction
with marina-style residential developments.
There are plans to extend nearly all the ports along the coast
as the various port authorities recognise the importance of increasing
moorings to keep pace with demand.
Benalmádena
Marina has over one thousand resident berths for motor boats and
yachts, and there are plans to increase this by another thousand
within a few years.
There
are numerous sailing clubs located at the Costa del Sol's larger
harbours, all of which offer tuition and classes.
Both crewed and uncrewed yachts can be rented, although you need
a skipper's certificate or a helmsman's overseas certificate to
rent an uncrewed yacht.
Sailing has always been
a favourite pursuit of the rich and famous and many of the coast's
celebrities and resident royals have boats in marinas along the
coast.
Antonio Banderas can often be spotted sailing from Benalmádena
Marina with Javier, his brother, while King Fahd of Saudi Arabia
anchors his spectacular motor launch in Puerto Banus harbour.
But you don't have to
be rich to enjoy the sea on the Costa del Sol. Nearly every port
now boasts sailing, diving, windsurfing, water-skiing and nautical
schools, as well as boats to hire for leisure sailing and deep-sea
fishing.
